At Home with a "lower level"
The primary request of my clients when starting to build this recreational
area to create a welcoming space for fun and exercise. Extending the relaxed
formality, which emanates from the home, was the building ground for the design concept.
Replacing the usual basement staircase with oak treads and risers, turned spindles and
raised wall panels led to wall divisions of pilasters supporting crown moldings in the
game room and theater. Soft tans and deep greens mesh and coordinate with furnishings
to warm the rooms.. The custom oak bar designed by Long, is centered with a tumbled
limestone backsplash, with the natural stone echoed in the powder room beyond the theater.
The flooring features oak hardwood surrounding the central carpeting, which provides coziness
and noise absorption in the expansive area.
